Pat Lehnert was the Toastmaster. She welcomed everyone and expressed the
wish that everyone had a great Memorial Day week-end.
Regina Litman introduced the word of the day: scuttle.
Cathy Adams was the only person to use the word.
Table Topics were conducted by Cathy Adams. Each member had a chance to
respond to a quote in the 1 to 2 minutes allotted time, as follows:
Thomas Jefferson: “Dreams of the future are better than the history
of the past.” Dave Shlegle
Arthur Miller: “You work a lifetime to pay off a house that you
finally own and there’s no one living in it.” Norm Logan
John F Kennedy: “The time to repair the roof is when the sun is
shining.” Pat Lehnert
J. B. Priestley: “The more elaborate our means of communication, the
less we communicate.” Regina Litman

not a small thing.” Jean Shipos

Norm’s speech took us through the trials and tribulations of his
grand-daughter’s first nursing position under horrible circumstances. (Not
clear what book he was working with.)
Dave instructed us in David Allen’s “Getting Things Done”, a time
management plan that advocates accomplishing your two minute tasks first.
His speech was interactive and informative. (CC Manual: Persuade with
Power)
General Evaluator was Jean Shipos. Cathy Adams was timer. Herb was
grammarian/ah counter.
Round robin evaluations were conducted to help the speakers improve their
communication and delivery skills.
Norm was recognized for stretching his limits and tackling an emotional,
serious topic.
Dave was recognized for a strong opening, audience interaction, and a novel
message.
Dave’s “Listen Up” section was a great hit at the end of the meeting!
(The peanut M&Ms were greatly appreciated.) Trivia question: What other
husbands did Marilyn Monroe have besides Arthur Miller and Joe DiMaggio?
Herb asked the floor to please work with him in his next presentation from
an advanced manual, Team Sales.
Dave and Regina volunteered to support Herb with the project.
Cathy, Jean and Pat will be on vacation for the next meeting.

The Washington Crossing Toastmasters Club enjoyed an exciting meeting on Wednesday, April 6, thanks to the presence of at least
20 guests from Bucks County Community College. They energized the meeting. President Dave Shlegle opened the meeting
by acknowledging the guests and having each person say their name and reason for attending.
Deborah Darbee was Toastmaster; the theme was, “Renewal.”
Patty Handwerk was Wordmaster; the word of the day was, “neophyte.”
Participating in Table Topics were: Norm Logan, Patty Handwerk, Jean Shipos, and two of the BCCC guests, Linda and Vinnie.
Regina Litman was Table Topic master and she focused her questions on the meaning of renewal, the meaning of
Toastmasters, and for the benefit of Vinnie, what kind of cell phone she should purchase now.
Two high level speeches were delivered by members Meg Fosco and President Dave Shlegle.
Meg’s speech, “There Can Be Only One”, met the objectives of Speech #5 in the Competent Communicatiors’ Manual.
Everyone was shocked to learn Meg’s secret obsession with the Highlanders! Actually, the speech was fun and
high energy and Meg used every part of her body along with interesting props to surprise her audience.
Dave’s speech, “I Killed Half My Staff Again”, followed up on his original, “I Killed My Staff Speech”, by weaving
a story about how he killed his staff in his fire-walking seminar business. Dave was speaking from Speech #2,
the advanced Story Telling Manual.
Patty Handwerk also served as General Evaluator. Debbie McKee evalauted Meg and Jean Shipos evaluated Dave. After
the routine round robin evaluation method, Pat Lehnert gave the Timer’s Report; Jean gave the Grammarian/Ah Counter reports.
The meeting closed with comments from the guests who all enjoyed their first Toastmasters meeting and
getting those extra credits.
The next meeting is on Wednesday, May 4, 2011.

Our second guest was Matt. Matt decided to checkout Toastmasters, when he
saw a Toastmaster reference in one of his text books. Matt helped us out
by being the Word Master of the Day (earwig: to annoy or attempt to
influence by private talk , also small bugs that go into your ear). Of
course, we spend the rest of the meeting “earwigging”, the first
definition)
Jessica and Matt are welcome to visit our club again during our April
meeting, and our club would be trilled to have them join our club.
Debbie McKee was the Table Topic master and present us with spring related
topics, both our guest participated fully.
We had three speakers during this meeting, Norm, Jean and Patty.
Norm and Jean speeches revolved around “Christmas Miracles”, and that
some miracles are different from others. Patty rehearsed her Who’s the
Boss speech, in preparation for an upcoming area contest appearance.
In preparation for their area contest appearances, both Norm and Patty
received very pointed and helpful feedback back from all of the club
members and even our two guest provided some very insightful suggestions on
improving the speeches.
Also helping out with the meeting by serving as Evaluators was Deborah
Darbee, Debbe McKee and Reginia Litman. It was an wonderful meeting.
—————————————————————————————————————————
Fast Forward two and half days. to March 5th: The Area 9F International
speech and Evaluation contest.
We had three Washington Crossing members in this battle of the best, Norm
Logan (Speech Contest), Jean Shipos (Evaluation Contest for Washington
Crossing) and Reginia Litman (Evaluation Contest for Doylestown).
Norm reworked his entire speech from the feedback he received by our club
members and guest at the last meeting. Norm really appreciate all of the
help our club gave him in preparing for the contest. His presentation was
nearly flawless, but fell just short of winning in a razor close contest.
Norm Logan came in second place. Glenn Laveson from Lower Bucks won the
Area International speech contest and will represent our area at the
Division F contest.
In the Evaluation contest our very own Jean Shipos shined during the
contest and took first place. Reginia gave an outstanding performance at
the evaluation contest, and was truly a worthy competitor. Please can
out and support our winners at the Division F contest on April 16 at the
Yardley-Makefield Library (it is about two miles from our meeting room)
Congratulation to all of our winners and competitors in this year’s
contest.

Our International Speech and Evaluation contest was held at this meeting. Norm Logan was selected to represent the Washington Crossing club at the Area 9F International Speech contest.
The Evaluation contest was held with four contestants, Norm, Pat, Donna and Jean. The model speaker was David Shlegle, who shared with us a love story (kinda of). Dave received plenty of feedback from the evaluations contestants. When the votes was counted and recounted, Jean Shipos came out on top, winning the Evaluation contest with Donna Roberts coming in a close second. Jean will be representing our club at the Area 9F Evaluation contest.
Cathy served as Contest Chair, Debbie D. as Chief Judge, Paula as SAA and Ballot counter and Reginia server as the contest timer.
Everyone did a wonderful job and I expect everyone to support our winners at the area contests.
Congratulation to this year’s winners Norm Logan (International Speech) and Jean Shipos (Evaluation)
